Srinagar, Feb 3: Train service has been suspended for security reasons on Sunday in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike today when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones of several development projects.
We have suspended all train runs on Sunday in the Kashmir valley after receiving an advisory from the administration and police late Saturday night, a senior railway official said this morning.
He said therefore no train will run on Srinagar-Budgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir track. Similarly, trains will remain off track on Budgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region.
He said railway authorities are acting on the advice of local administration who are taking decision keeping in view the safety and security of passengers, railway staff and property. In the past railway suffered losses worth crores of rupees during protests and strikes when demonstrators damage railway property.
Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is being considered safe, fast and cheap against other mode of transport.
