Srinagar, Jan 31: Eighteen flights were on Thursday cancelled as Air traffic at Srinagar International Airport was suspended due to fresh snowfall and poor visibility.
This is the fifth time air traffic was affected at Srinagar airport this month due to bad weather.
“No flight could operate since morning as the visibility was very poor due to snowfall,” an official of airport said.
He said 18 flights, including six each of Indigo and GoAir, two each of Vistara and Spciejet, one each of Air Asia and Air India — have been cancelled due to bad weather.
Meanwhile, two groups of about 70 people, who were scheduled to undertake ‘Umrah’ – an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah and Madina in Saudi Arabia, were disappointed after they were asked to return from the airports following cancellation of flights.
“We were scheduled to take an Air India flight at 1130 hrs from Srinagar to Delhi, then a connected flight to Saudi Arabia late in the night on Thursday. But, after waiting for several hours we were informed that the flight has been cancelled due to poor visibility,” a passenger said.
“It is ironic that air traffic at an International airport gets suspended very often despite the weather not being that bad,” he said, adding their flight will be rescheduled in next couple of days.
