Udhampur, Jan 29: Emphasizing the important role of women in participatory democracy, National Conference Women Wing State President Shamima Firdous on Tuesday called for their adequate representation in decision making institutions, saying this will lead to harmonious growth of the society.
“Appreciating this imperative, National Conference has already pioneered several initiatives like reservation for women in Panchayats and other grass roots level democratic institutions several years ago”, Firdous said while addressing a day-long convention of the NC Women Wing here.
Firdous recalled the pioneering role of Madr-e-Mehrban towards female literacy and economic emancipation of women decades ago and said this odyssey continued under the leadership of Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. She referred to 50 per cent reservation for women in Medical Colleges across the State and said this measure was first of its kind across the country, which reflected the urge of National Conference to provide equal opportunities of progress to women. She said the party has adopted a comprehensive approach towards women emancipation in terms of their education, vocational trainings and job opportunities. This, she said, has resulted in huge career advancement of women who are proving their capabilities as administrators, professionals, academicians and entrepreneurs.
“Though much has been done, much more is needed to be achieved by providing vistas of opportunities to women in different spheres of life”, she said and exhorted the cadre to reach out every household and make the women aware of the landmark initiatives taken by National Conference from time to time to bring about healthy change in their academic and economic conditions.
Dwelling upon the prevailing political situation, the NC Women Wing State President decried the BJP’s divisive agenda, urging people, especially the women, to foil their machinations by maintaining unity and tranquility. She said NC symbolizes the unity between all sections and regions of the State and hoped this spirt will be further nurtured by the people by strengthening the bonds of amity and brotherhood.
NC Women Wing Provincial President Satwant Kour Dogra and NC Provincial Vice President Vijay Laxmi Dutta also addressed the day-long convention and highlighted the crucial need of generating awareness among women about their rights.
They spelled out the measures taken by National Conference about political empowerment of women with an avowed objective of soliciting their participation in decision making in democratic institutions at various levels.
District President National Conference. Udhampur Sunil Verma and Provincial Vice President NC Women Wing Pushpa Dogra also addressed the convention.
Besides large number of women workers, the functionaries of various wings of National Conference were also present in the convention.
