Inclement weather leading to closure of 270 km long Srinagar-Jammu highway has triggered crisis in Kashmir. The Valley bound passengers are stranded in Jammu for the past seven days and hundreds are stuck on the highway.
Mainstream parties have cut across the party lines and are demanding that passengers stuck in Jammu and on the highway should be airlifted and adequate arrangements should be made for them. The highway was closed nearly one week ago and since then authorities are trying to clear the stranded vehicles.
Media reports claim that there more than 2000 trucks carrying essentials are stranded on the highway. The closure of the highway has led to shortage of essential commodities in the markets and the prices have shot up. The weather has punctured the tall claims of the successive regimes that Srinagar-Jammu highway is an all weather road.
Haphazard expansion of the highway has led to its deterioration. The dilapidated condition of the highway has even put the question mark over the efficiency and capability of the NHAI as the company has failed to come up with plan-B to keep the highway open during the adverse weather conditions.
The recent closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway should serve as an eye opener for the people at the helm. It’s unfortunate that the politicians who have ruled Jammu and Kashmir during all these years have failed to provide the people of Kashmir with an alternative highway.
The Srinagar-Jammu highway has been unofficially declared unfit for two-way traffic as it leads to massive traffic snarls on the highway due to its small width. Centre needs to come out from just handling law and order in the state and concentrate on the issues which are important for Kashmir and the people of Kashmir.
