Dhoni, Dhawan should have played domestic cricket before Australia ODI series: Gambhir

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has said that the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and MS Dhoni should have played domestic cricket ahead of the ODI series against Australia. While the ODI series was fruitful for Dhoni who found his form, Dhawan’s struggle against the moving ball continued. Dhoni finished the series with 193 runs in the series while Dhawan had a sorry series scoring only 55 runs at an average of 18.
Gambhir’s comments come in the wake of the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2019 World Cup. In an interaction with ESPN Cricinfo, the left-hander spoke on a range of issues regarding the current Indian cricket team and one of them was regarding players playing domestic cricket ahead of any.
“I was a little disappointed because some of the guys should have played first-class cricket. The selectors should have pushed them to play first-class cricket. Because it’s a World Cup year, you’ve got to be in prime form. Whether it was MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu (Rayudu retired from first-class cricket earlier this season)… all those guys who went to Australia” said Gambhir.
Apart from keeping his views on Shikhar and Dhoni, Gambhir touched upon some other topics as well. While he said that with Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik already in the team, a place for Rishabh Pant in the Indian World Cup squad seems difficult, he batted for the inclusion of senior spinner R Ashwin in the squad.
With time still left before the event goes underway and with the Indian team playing a limited overs series against New Zealand as a build up to that, it will be interesting to see if the team management and the selection committee pays any heed to Gambhir’s remarks in their process of picking and choosing the squad.
