Peoples Democratic Party has expelled yet another party leader, Altaf Bukhari, for what it called “indulging in anti-party activities.” Since the day PDP-BJP government has fallen in Jammu and Kashmir, the PDP has been at crossroads as top party leaders have said goodbye to the party and others have been expelled.
The PDP crumbling like a pack of cards has proved it beyond doubt that the decision of the PDP leadership to share power with the BJP has consumed the party.
From a small party in 1999, the PDP emerged as an alternative for the grand old party National Conference. The PDP even succeeded in dislodging the NC in 2002 as it shared power with Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2008 and 2014 assembly elections party kept on increasing its seats tally in the Valley and emerged as a force to reckon with.
People from different sections of the society joined the party and made it strong. But after the demise of the former Chief Minister late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, PDP started crumbling under its own weight and three years after Mufti’s demise his daughter the incumbent PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is left with a handful of people around her. The party which just three years ago looked invincible stands nowhere today. Even the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has acknowledged that joining hands with BJP proved to be a disaster. Instead on bridging the gap with the disgruntled leaders, Mehbooba has been blaming them for PDP’s disintegration. She needs to come out from the denial mode and admit her own mistakes also. Blaming everyone except your own self is not helping Mehbooba’s cause. With each passing day PDP is becoming weaker and its leaders are all set to face tough competition in the forthcoming polls.
