Dowry is a social evil in the society that has caused tortures and crimes towards women. The evil has taken lives of women in society be it poor, middle class or the rich. However, it is the poor who succumbs and fall prey to it, more due to their lack of awareness and education. It is because of the dowry system, that daughters are not valued as much as the sons.
In the society, many times it has been seen that they are seen as a liability and are often subjected to subjugation and are given second hand treatment may it be in education are other amenities. Despite the fear of law, the number of dowry deaths has increased and harassment still continues. Not many families are keen on lodging a complaint on dowry demands or harassment. Very few brave families stand up against this evil. And to achieve better results at the grassroots level, awareness must be created.
The clergy and scholars can play an important role and they should strongly condemn the practice and refuse to solemnize marriages where dowry is involved. Fight against the practice of dowry is not an easy task as in most cases one is fighting against their near and dear ones. To complicate matters, to continue this fight, one would have to fight against a system, which justifies the practice in the name of culture and tradition. Such fights are the toughest but have to be fought to save the future of our girls.
We need to mobilize the youth and women to stop this practice.
Today the government has come up with many laws and reforms, not only to eradicate the dowry system not also to uplift the status of the girl child by bringing in many government schemes
It is now for the society at large to become aware and understand the situation. We must take active steps in bringing about the necessary charge and stop giving and taking dowry system. We must know that we should start valuing our daughters first, so that others know their value once they grow up.
Education is one powerful and valuable gift that you can give your daughters. This will in turn help her to be financially sound and be contributing member of her family, giving her respect and right status in her family. So providing your daughter with a solid education, and encouraging her to pursue a career of her choice is the best dowry any parents can ever give to their daughters
If we take the example of our Kashmir about 10000 girls have crossed the marriageable age in Srinagar city according to Ab Rashid Naik Secretary of Kashmiri based trust. Unnecessary customs invented by the people on their own have made marriages costly. These traditions needs to be cut from its roots and people living in city should think over it as it is spreading all over the state day by day.
Do not encourage the practice of giving or accepting dowry. Can’t we do something against this system except feeling sad and regretting.
The case of suicide rate among women increasing but everyone marks this with love system which is totally wrong. This system is becoming the arm of all evils.
Now it is up to youth who can change this. We have the ability to change our society. Requesting to youth from all faiths and beliefs to involve in the awareness in large numbers.
All others have been made lawful for you provided you seek (them in marriage) with your property…” [Noble Quran 4:24]
Regarding one of the Companions who was poor and wished to marry, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
“Search for something, even if it is just a ring made from iron.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
