Mehbooba visits slain militant’s family in Shopian

Srinagar, Jan 3: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and Peoples Democratic President (PDP) on Thursday visited family of slain army man turned militant Idrees Ahmad Mir’s house in volatile Safnagri village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. Idrees, who was posted in Bihar, joined Hizb after he came home on leave in April 2018. He was killed in a gun-battle with the army on November 7, 2018, that took place in his native village. After Mehbooba met Idrees’ family, she said that forces should not harass families of militants. Idrees’ brother Mir Muzamil is in police custody since November. The family is trying to secure his release ever since but without any luck.
Taking to social networking site Twitter, Mehbooba wrote: “No mother wants her son to pick up a gun and lose his life in the prime of his youth. Therefore harassing the family is not going to help the situation. Had my initiative of cease fire sustained many more precious lives would have been saved.”
“No force or military can help us win this war with our people. Only affection of mothers and family will help reclaim our own generation in rage,” she wrote on Twitter.
While talking to Idrees’ family Mehbooba said that families of militants should not be harassed.
“In my tenure I had directed forces not to harass brothers or sisters of militants. I hope that governor gives such directions to forces too,” she said.
Earlier on Sunday, Mehbooba visited south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, where she said that she won’t allow bloodshed in south Kashmir and it won’t be made a battleground.
