ADC Bandipora reviews removal of illicit opium, cannabis cultivation

Bandipora, Jan 2: Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora (ADC) Zahoor Ahmad Mir on Wednesday reviewed the progress of removal of illicit opium /cannabis cultivation in the district.
The meeting was attended by Divisional Forest Officer Shabir Ahmad Bhat, Chief Horticulture Officer, Chief Agriculture Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, Dy Chief Education Officer, Assistant Floriculture Officer, Excise and Taxation Officer, Showkat Bahar and representative of revenue department from Sumbal and Hajin.
On the occasion, ADC said Government has formulated a policy of rehabilitation of people who are involved in cultivation of opium/ cannabis.
He urged the officials to identify such persons so that government can rehabilitate them at earliest by providing them an alternate income generating units. He stressed on mass awareness among the people so that they can be motivated for agriculture and allied activities.
He said awareness in educational institutions will also be focused and eviction will be prioritized and simultaneously rehabilitation process will be implemented along with use of weedicides to remove the crop on ground level. He said the government has also a provision of scholarship for affected children so that they don’t suffer.
He also stated that a drug de-addiction centre will also be established in Govt Degree College Bandipora, Sumbal and Gurez.
On the occasion Excise & Taxation Officer, Showkat Bahar said they will organize workshops to aware people regarding harmful effects of opium/ cannabis and will launch door to door campaign to evict his crop from grassroots level.
On the occasion, several plans were formulated for identification and destruction of illicit opium /cannabis cultivation which includes identification of areas and families involved, rehabilitation, awareness, constitution of teams and strict action against violators
