Srinagar, Dec 31: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday rang up Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and conveyed her outrage over the desecration of historic Srinagar Jamia Masjid.
Taking to Twitter, Mehbooba said Jamia Masjid and its pulpit are the most important landmarks of Kashmir’s religious and cultural moorings.
“Appearance of a few youth with IS flag in Jama Masjid Srinagar is desecration of the most important institution of Kashmir’s religious, social life. Called @MirwaizKashmir, Umar sahheb to convey my outrage,” Mehbooba wrote on her twitter handle.
She added: “Jama Masjid & its pulpit are most important landmarks of our religious, cultural moorings. Can’t allow barbaric forces to defile it in the name of Islam.”
Interestingly, after the killing of top Hizb commander Burhan Wani in July 2016, Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP government locked the Jamia Masjid for 18 consecutive Fridays. In May 2018, days before BJP pulled out of Mehbooba led collation, forces entered Jamia Masjid and fired teargas shells inside the mosque premises. The incident was condemned widely and seen as direct interference into religious affairs.
