Srinagar shivers at minus 6.7 degree Celsius

Srinagar, Dec 26: Chilly weather conditions have intensified as the mercury dipped further and settled several degrees below normal in Kashmir valley, where the maximum temperature also plunged due to overcast conditions, coupled with ice cold winds. Meanwhile, all water bodies, including ponds and khuls, were frozen in Ladakh as the mercury dipped further in the twin border towns of Leh and Kargil.
A Met department spokesperson said that very light rain or snow would occur during the next 24 hours on higher reaches in Kashmir valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is action in the region. “The minimum and maximum temperatures have dipped in the valley due to overcast conditions,” he added.
The border town of Leh was the coldest place in the region after the mercury dipped about 7 degree from Wednesday and settled at minus 17.1 degree. The mercury at the neighbouring Kargil town also dipped and settled at minus 14.4 degree.
He said the sky would be generally cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 3 degree and minus 10 degree, respectively.
Majority parts of the famed Dal Lake and other water bodies were frozen on Wednesday after the mercury in the summer capital, Srinagar, dipped over a degree from Tuesday and settled at minus 6.7 degree, which is about 5 degree below normal. Shikarawalas were seen breaking the frozen water to move ahead in the lake since early morning. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature also dipped and settled below normal in Srinagar due to overcast conditions.
He said the sky would be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 9 degree and minus 2 degree, respectively.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was the coldest place in the valley. Against minus 7.6 degree recorded on Tuesday, the night temperature in Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are covered under two to three feet of snow, dipped and settled at minus 9.4 degree. The night temperature in Gulmarg was about 4 degree below normal.
The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped and settled at minus 7.9 degree, against minus 7.7 degree recorded on Tuesday. The night temperature in the health resort was about 3 degree below normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag dipped and settled at minus 5.9 degree, minus 6.4 degree and minus 5.4 degree, respectively. The night temperatures in these places were several degrees below freezing point.
