Intense cold wave continues in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 18: Intense cold wave continued as the mercury remained several degrees below freezing point across Kashmir valley though the maximum temperature remained above normal due to sunshine.
Meanwhile, there was no respite from chilly weather conditions in Ladakh region, where the border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 15.8 degree, followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 15.1 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that weather will remain dry during the next five days in Kashmir valley, which could result in further dip in the night temperature. However, he said the maximum temperature is expected to remain above normal due to sunshine.
After recording the coldest night of the season so far at minus 16.1 degree, the mercury improved about a degree from Monday and settled at minus 15.1 degree at Leh. But, the night temperature at Kargil dipped over 4 degree from Monday and settled at minus 15.8 degree.
He said skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 4 degree and minus 16 degree, respectively.
People woke up to a sunny Tuesday morning though ice cold winds continued in the summer capital, Srinagar, where the night temperature remained 3 degree below normal. Against minus 4.8 degree recorded on Monday, the night temperature in Srinagar was minus 4.6 degree.
He said skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 11 degree and minus 5 degree, respectively.
Even though there was an improvement of about a degree from Monday in the night temperature, world famous health resort of Pahalgam was the coldest place in the valley. Against minus 8.3 degree recorded on Monday, the night temperature at the health resort, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, settled at minus 7.7 degree, which is over 3 degree below normal.
The night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg also improved and settled at minus 7.6 degree, against minus 8.3 degree recorded on Monday. The night temperature in Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow, was about 3 degree below normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag improved and settled at minus 5.3 degree, minus 5.9 degree and minus 4.8 degree, respectively.
