Night chill continues in Kashmir, Leh freezes at -16.1 degree

Srinagar, Dec 17: People continued to shiver as the night temperature remained several degrees below freezing point in Kashmir valley though sun came out, brining much needed relief from chilly weather conditions during the day though ice cold winds continued.
Meanwhile, all the water bodies, including ponds and khuls, were frozen in Ladakh, where the border town of Leh recorded the coldest night of the season so far at minus 16.1 degree while the mercury at the neighbouring town of Kargil dipped and settled at minus 11.4 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that weather would remain dry during the next six days in Kashmir valley, which could result in further dip in the night temperature.
The night temperature in Leh dipped about a degree from Sunday and settled at minus 16.1 degree. Against minus 10.8 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Kargil dipped and settled at minus 11.4 degree.
He said the sky would be mainly dry to partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperature would be around 3 degree and minus 16 degree, respectively.
After recording the coldest night of the season so far on Sunday at minus 5.6 degree, the night temperature in the summer capital, Srinagar, improved and settled at minus 4.8 degree, which is still about 4 degree below normal.
Parts of the Dal Lake, particularly near the banks and interior areas, were frozen in the summer capital. The Shikarawalas were struggling to move their boats due to frozen water in the morning. However, as the day progressed frozen parts melted near banks though in the interior parts it remained frozen.
Meanwhile, there was water shortage in many areas, particularly in the outskirts where taps were frozen. At some places people were seen trying to defreeze the frozen taps by burning wood. However, as the day progressed the frozen water de-froze.
He said the sky would be mainly dry to partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperature would be around 11 degree and minus 4 degree respectively in Srinagar.
The mercury at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed an improvement of over a degree from Sunday in the night temperature though it was still over 4 degree below normal. Against minus 9.5 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, settled at 8.3 degree.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, witnessed an improvement of a degree from Sunday in the night temperature, which settled at minus 8.3 degree, which is over 4 degree below normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag improved and settled at minus 5.2 degree, minus 5.8 degree and minus 4.9 degree, respectively.
