Seven civilians getting killed near an encounter site at Sirnoo Pulwama in south Kashmir has shocked entire Kashmir.
According to the media reports more than 20 persons also sustained injuries in the forces action and they are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. Everyone has condemned the excessive use of lethal force by the government forces on protesters.
Even Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed grief over the killings and directed the security forces to minimize collateral damage during gunfights. Mainstream politicians cut across the party lines and demanded a high level probe into these killings.
Every Kashmiri shares a common concern that bloodshed should stop and a way out needs to be found to restore peace and tranquility in the Valley. The need of the hour is to make forces accountable. They need to be told that there is a difference between militants and protesters and there are other methods through which crowd could be controlled.
Governor’s administration needs to gear up to prevent such incidents from taking place in future. If this unending cycle of violence is not curbed it could have far reaching consequences and add fuel to the fire in Kashmir. The Valley has turned into battle field and it looks like as if the entire state machinery is at war with the people. This attitude needs to change and the prevailing trust deficit has to be addressed. If killings don’t stop the day is not far when entire Kashmir would be on streets and the authorities would find it difficult to control the situation. Forces on the ground need to act responsibly. Resorting to indiscriminate firing on unarmed protesters is unacceptable.
