Luka Modric slams Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo for not turning up at Ballon d’Or 2018 ceremony

Luka Modric is one of the most humble footballers in the world at the moment. Someone who has been down to earth through thick and thin and earned accolades for both his country and club at the highest level. The Croatian skipper is a special footballer not just because he has been one of the most consistent midfielders in past few years, but also because he is the one to have ended a decade-long duopoly of icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Modric lifted the Ballon d’Or 2018 ending a decade-long domination of Messi and Ronaldo. The Real Madrid midfielder was rewarded for his splendid performances for club and country. While he was instrumental in leading Real to a record third successive title under Zinedine Zidane, Modric also played a key role in taking Croatia into the final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The Croatian superstar after ending Messi and Ronaldo’s duopoly was asked about the duo’s absence from the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris and he appeared to slam the duo over their decision to give the showpiece event a miss. Modric said it was unfair on Ronaldo and Messi’s part to not attend the award ceremony and that it didn’t make sense to him.
“I can’t say why somebody decided not to show up, that’s their choice. Doesn’t make much sense to me not to attend, though. I guess they liked showing up when they were winning the awards.
“Such behaviour is unfair towards the other players, the fans, the game and finally towards the voters who gave them the award for 10 years in a row. But I guess everyone acts as they please,” Modric told Sportske Novosti.
It was second major award show where Ronaldo didn’t turn up after finishing behind Modric for the two honours respectively. Earlier, Ronaldo missed out on the FIFA Player of the year award, which was won by the Croatian skipper. While he finished second in the Ballon d’Or rankings, Messi failed to feature in the top three as he finished fifth.
