Army General Speaks

Lt Gen (Retd) H S Panag, who was posted as GOC of the army’s Northern Command, Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, has said the army had created an environment to resolve Kashmir but the elected governments failed to find any solution to the vexed issue.
He wrote in The Print that the “unpopular coalition government could not provide the healing touch in Jammu and Kashmir.”
The retired Army General who has served in Jammu and Kashmir has squarely blamed the politicians for the mess Kashmir is in at present. Politicians may not agree with the retired army general but everyone shares the common feeling that had the political regimes handled the J&K in a proper way today situation in the Valley would not have been so volatile. It’s unfortunate that mainstream leaders in Kashmir have always tried to play politics even over small issues in the Valley. Had they tried to reach out to the masses and made an attempt to address the brewing resentment lot could have changed.
Soon after the PDP-BJP came into power in Jammu and Kashmir in 2015 political pundits predicted that the alliance won’t last long and termed it as a disaster. The three years of PDP-BJP rule in J&K reversed the gains which were made in the past. The three year rule witnessed escalation in violence and saw many local youth joining the militant ranks. It looked like that nineties has returned and situation is back to square one.
Since the day Governor’s rule has been imposed in the state the entire administration seems to be busy in fighting militants and restoring peace in the Valley. But everyone knows that situation in Kashmir has turned from bad to worse and politicians have failed to live upto the expectations of the people.
