Night chill intensifies in Kashmir, day temp improves

Srinagar, Nov 30: People continued to shiver as the night temperature dipped further and settled below normal due to dry weather at majority of the places in Kashmir valley though there was slight improvement in the mercury during the day.
The border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 7.6 degree, followed by neighbouring town of Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 6.5 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that the weather will remain dry during the next four days in the valley, which could result in further dip in the night temperature though the weather during the day could improve.
He said the mercury in Kargil dipped and settled at minus 7.6 degree, against minus 7.4 degree recorded on Thursday. Even though there was an improvement of about 2 degree from Thursday in the night temperature in Leh, the mercury settled at minus 6.5 degree.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place in the valley after the mercury dipped further and settled at minus 4.3 degree, against minus 3 degree recorded on Thursday. The night temperature in the ski resort, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was over a degree below normal.
However, despite sub-zero night temperature, tourists are having a time of their lives in Gulmarg though the footfall of visitors, including national and international, will increase many folds after the ski slopes are covered with several feet of snow. The ski resort is a major attraction during winters for adventure sports lovers from across the world.
After the mercury remained constant at minus 0.9 degree since Thursday in the summer capital, Srinagar, people woke up to a chill and misty Friday morning due to ice cold winds. However, as the day progressed, sun came out brining some relief from the cold weather though ice cold winds continued in Srinagar.
The night temperature in world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped about a degree from Thursday and settled at minus 4 degree, which is slightly below normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag dipped and settled at minus 1.4 degree, minus 1.8 degree and minus 0.7 degree, respectively.
