FMD vaccination begins in Pulwama

Pulwama, Nov 26: Department of Animal Husbandry Pulwama today started a massive vaccination drive against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the district.
The programme was kick-started by chief Animal Husbandry officer Pulwama Dr Gh. Nabi Sofi in presence of Disease investigation officer and Block Veterinary Officer Pulwama.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Animal Husbandry said that a massive vaccination drive against FMD is being started throughout the district to minimize the incidence of the disease. He added that in 2017 around 20% of the livestock got infected with FMD owing to its new mutating strains. With the campaign, he ensured the eradication of the disease in the district by the end of 2019. He underscored the importance of the programme as around 1.16 lakh livestock in the district provide subsistence to a huge chunk of population associated with the dairy and livestock trade.
Chief Animal Husbandry also flagged of a team of para-vets who will vaccinate the animals in respective areas of the District.
