Train service suspended in Kashmir for security reasons

Srinagar, Nov 22: Train service was suspended on Thursday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called for a general strike today against the killing of separatist leader Hafizullah Mir by unidentified gunmen in Achabal area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday.
We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley today following advisory received from the authorities, including police, on Wednesday night, a senior traffic police official told UNI.
He said no train will chug on Srinagar-Budgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir. Similarly, he said, all trains will remain suspended on Budgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region.
This is the third time train service was suspended in the Kashmir valley during this month.
We are acting on the advice of local administration since the safety and security of passengers, railway staff and property are important, he said adding in the past railway suffered damage worth crores of rupees during protests.
Train service has become very popular in the Kashmir valley as it is cheap, fast and safe against other mode of transport.
