Tehreek-e-Hurriyat district president Anantnag shot dead

Anantnag, Nov 20: Unidentified assailants Monday shot dead senior separatist leader and a close aide of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani at his native village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Hafizullah Mir, the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat district president for Anantnag district was busy in some construction work at Bhadro Achabal village, when unidentified assailants fired upon him and fled from the spot. The better half of Mir, who was standing beside her also suffered injuries.
Hafizullah Mir was rushed to a district hospital, but was declared brought dead.
Medical superintendent of Anantnag district hospital Dr Abdul Majeed Mehrab confirmed Mir’s death and said that he was shot in his abdomen and chest.
The police registered a case in the matter and investigations have begun.
Hafizullah Mir was the district president of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat led by Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai from Anantnag. He was very close to Syed Ali Geelani.
Mir was released from jail last month after serving two-year detention under draconian Public Safety Act.
Pertinently, Mir had been receiving threat calls from unknown numbers for the last one month.
In a statement on November 12, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat said that Mir had received threats from unknown callers.
TeH had demanded that the authorities should verify and locate the origin of these calls and make it public. He had warned that if anything ‘untoward’ happened to him, the government would be responsible for it.
His killing invited widespread condemnation while Hurriyat and Hizbul Mujhadeen blamed Indian Agencies for the attack. (CNS)
