Srinagar, Nov 18: Two militants of Al-Badr outfit were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on Sunday in south Kashmir district of Shopian, a police spokesman said.
On a credible information about the presence of militants in village Reeban, Zainpora in south Kashmir district of Shopian early this morning Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation, he said.
However, when the area was being sealed, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons, he said adding security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter. He said two militants were killed in the encounter and their bodies were recovered.
He said the slain militants of Al-Badr were identified as Nawaz Ahmad Wagay son of Ghulam Qadir resident of Rebban Zainapora and Yawar Wani son of Ali Mohammad Wani resident of Batnoor Litter Pulwam.
Both the killed militants were involved in a series of attacks on security establishments and many other civilian atrocities in the area.
Arms & ammunition including incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter.
Citizens are once again requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any.
Meanwhile, multiple rounds of funeral prayers were held for two Al Badr militants in their respective native places on Sunday.
Reports said that thousands of people from various areas of the south Kashmir attended the funeral prayers of two militants identified as Nawaz Ahmad Wagay son of Ghulam Qadir resident of Rebban Zainapora and Yawar Wani son of Ali Mohammad Wani resident of Batnoor Litter Pulwama.
Reports said that thousand people poured onto streets as the bodies of the duo were lifted, the scenes were poignant amid the chanting of pro-freedom slogans, hailing the “martyrs.” An eyewitness said that scores of men and women wept bitterly as the bodies were being carried towards its final resting place.
