Night temp dips below freezing point in Kashmir

Srinagar records coldest night of season

Srinagar, Nov 7: The chilly weather conditions have intensified as the night temperature has dipped several degree below freezing point due to dry weather in Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, which recorded the coldest night of the season so far at minus 2.2 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours in the state, which could result in further dip in the night temperature though the day temperature is expected to improve.
However, he said a fresh Western Disturbance, which originated from the Arabian sea, will hit the region on Friday and could result in moderate to heavy snowfall in the valley.
The border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 9 degree, followed by Leh at minus 8.4 degree.
After witnessing the coldest night of the season so far with mercury dipping about 5 degree from Tuesday and settling at minus 2.2 degree, people woke up to sunny Wednesday morning in Srinagar though ice cold winds continued. People could be seen buying warm clothes, including sweaters, jackets and mufflers in Srinagar, where the maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 8 degree below normal. The night temperature in Srinagar was 5 degree below normal.
The night temperature in Kargil dipped about 3 degree from Tuesday and settled at minus 9 degree while the mercury at Leh plunged and settled at 8.4 degree, against 7.6 degree recorded yesterday.
He said skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 7 degree and minus 8 degree, respectively.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which is 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was the only place in the region which witnessed an improvement in the night temperature though it was still 8 degree below normal. Against minus 7.6 degree recorded on Tuesday, the night temperature in Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are under fresh snow, improved and settled at minus 6.6 degree.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also witnessed the coldest night of the season so far. Against 1.3 degree recorded on Tuesday, the night temperature in Pahalgam was minus 5.2 degree, which is 5 degree below normal.
The mercury in Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag also dipped and settled at minus 2.8 degree, minus 1.8 degree and minus 1.7 degree, respectively.
