Compensate fruit growers

All the political parties have cut across the party lines to seek compensation for the fruit growers, who have suffered massive damages due to untimely snowfall across the Valley.
Governor Satya Pal Malik has not disappointed the politicians and the fruit growers and has assured them that they would be compensated.
He has said that an assessment is being done and that the farmers would be compensated once the loss reports are prepared in next few days.
The losses have been widespread but these have been more in south Kashmir as the southern districts received heavy snowfall. This year the growers were happy as the yield was good and it was a bumper crop. But the entire crop has been buried under the snow.
One hopes that the Governor’s Administration directs the concerned officials to expedite the survey and asks them not to linger on the process. It has been observed in the past that such surveys have taken lot of time and the affected don’t get any compensation at the end.
The J&K Government should approach the Government of India to seek relief for the affected growers so that they could be compensated. Initial reports suggest that losses have been widespread and in many areas growers have lost their entire yield.
One of the legislators has urged government to declare huge the damages caused as natural calamity so that fruit growers and orchard owners can be compensated more properly and in stipulated time.
The ball is in the court of the state and central governments. People at the helm have to prove that they really care for the people of Kashmir and they are ready to lend a helping hand to sufferers.
