Vakil concerned over damage to apple crop

Srinagar Nov 4: President Jammu Kashmir Bachao Tehreek and former minister Abdul Gani Vakil Sunday voiced concern over the massive damage caused due to the untimely snowfall across the valley especially in apple rich parts.
In a statement, Vakil’s said the sudden unexpected snowfall lead damage to fruit trees in orchards causing anxiety among apple growers due to massive losses inflicted on their apple harvest and apple trees.
“Even the vehicles carrying fruit are immovable on national highway may damage to fruit industry worth cores if the government on war footing basis does not take step to open the road and secondly fruit growers may be deprived of expected highest rate of apple on the eve of Diwali,” Vakil’s added.
He stressed upon the governor to intervene and direct strongly his administration for immediate assessment and adequate compensation of losses of fruit orchards suffered due to heavy snowfall.
Vakil’s said the fruit harvesting season is at the last stage at this juncture in the Kashmir valley and trees are yet to be naturally exfoliated, snowfall has marred apple clip and caused immense damage to trees whose branches has shattered which would affect definitely the apple production in future .
He added that apple growing is the main source of economy in the valley especially in Rafiabad, Sopore, Zangir and Shopian in South Kashmir and the snowfall has inflicted maximum damage to the growers.
Vakil said while the snowfall plunged the whole Valley into darkness and snapped water, power supply and other basic amenities of life.
He stressed on government to take measures on war footing basis to restore all essential supplies especially power so the studies of students is not affected in the present ongoing examination.
