Chill intensifies in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 5: The chill weather conditions have intensified on Monday as maximum and minimum temperatures remained several degrees below normal due to ice cold winds and overcast conditions in Kashmir valley.
A Met department spokesperson said that isolated very light rain and snow would occur during the next 24 hours in the state. “The weather will remain dry from Tuesday onwards, which could result in further dip in the maximum and minimum temperatures,” he added.
However, he said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) would hit the region on Friday and could result in more rain and snow.
Leh in Ladakh region was the coldest place in the region after the mercury dipped 4 degree from Sunday and settled at minus 5.5 degree due to open skies. But, the night temperature in the border town of Kargil improved over 8 degree from Sunday and settled at 4 degree.
Despite sub-zero maximum temperature, tourists, including foreigners, were out on ski slopes of world famous resort of Gulmarg, which received moderate to heavy snowfall for about 36 hours till Sunday morning. “The day temperature in Gulmarg is below freezing point though the tourists are out on ski slopes enjoying different games since early this morning,” a hotelier said.
The Met spokesperson said that the sky is cloudy in the ski resort, resulting in further dip in the maximum temperature. “The night temperature remained constant at minus 5 degree in Gulmarg, making it the coldest place in the valley,” he added.
After witnessing an improvement in the night temperature due to overcast conditions, people woke up to a chilly Monday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. Against minus 0.4 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Srinagar was 1.8 degree, which is still slightly below normal.
