Srinagar, Oct 25: “We The Human” forum for nature & mankind, a public charitable trust, on Thursday organized a seminar cum symposium here on adulteration and use of toxic chemicals in foods.
The organizers in a statement said the symposium was organized in collaboration with Department of Environmental Science Government Women’s College Srinagar.
Chief Guest on the occasion S. Baldev Singh CMD Peaks Auto Pvt. Ltd and Guest of Honour Afaq Bhat, Chief Editor Precious Kashmir and Alsafa News appreciated efforts being put in by “We The Human” in organising awareness programs on serious environmental issues and asked students to make use of social media apps like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to highlight serious environmental issues around them.
Professor Harun Naik Food Technologist SKUAST informed the gathering that use of toxic chemicals and adulterants in foods, beverages and confectionaries has increased dangerously causing a number of serious diseases involving vital organs of human bodies as well as badly affecting mental health of people in J&K.
He said the enforcement authorities neither have the infrastructure nor will to stop this menace.
Retd Principal Secretary Law K Y S Manhas, Vice Chairman, of the trust exhorted officers of J&K Food Safety and Legal Metrology departments to be fearful of God’s fury and launch a vigrous movement against adulteration & use of toxic chemicals in Foods and Milk otherwise happening of cancer related diseases in people will spread like an epidemic in coming years.
Earlier, S Prem Singh informed that We The Human has been organising awareness camps in school colleges on different serious environmental issues as well as organising free multi speciality medical check up camps in far flung & remote areas. The trust had also launched successful campaign against use of carcinogenic chemicals like calcium carbide & Chinese sachets for artificial ripening of fruits like mangoes, papaya, bananas etc in different markets of J&K.
Lalit Sharma Retd Adl PCCF and Prof Sumaira Shafi HoD Environmental Science GCW M A Road informed gathering of around two hundred prominent citizens and students that excessive sprays of toxic chemical pesticides and colouring agents in apple orchards and agricultural fields is a matter of grave concern. The government needs to adopt a strict modus operandi to check this menace, otherwise our state might witness spread of cancer related diseases among people as an epidemic in coming years.
A number of college students and PHD scholars including Bazila, Nahila Bilal, Tehiyya Qadri, Warda Shah, Iqra Bashir, Faiyza Aijaz, Hafza Mushtaq, Fatima Rafiq, Arbina shared their views regarding failure of food safety and other agencies in checking adulteration in foods & milk and use of plastic polythene bags.
Noted environmentalists Nazir Benazir also addressed the gathering and exhorted people to supplement our environment by planting trees.
Naseer Ahmad Khan MD Meridian group of Hotels, Asstt Prof & Environmentalist Rouf Ahmad, Environmentalists Mohinder Kumar, Mushtaq Shah, Gohar Wani, Ghulam Hassan, Mushtaq Mir Chief Editor Alpha News service were among other dignitaries present on the occasion.
