Chairman of the Peoples Conference and former Minister Sajad Gani Lone seems to have tickled his ally Bharatiya Janata Party by stating that Srinagar would have a Mayor from his party Peoples Conference.
His statement came a day after state president of BJP Ravinder Raina claimed that Srinagar and Jammu cities would have Mayors from BJP.
Till now everyone was of the opinion that BJP and Peoples Conference are allies and would distribute the municipalities among themselves mutually. But Sajad Lone’s statement has added spice to the politics which is being played over who would be the next Mayor of Srinagar.
Anyway suspense will be over soon but now it remains to be seen who would rule the local bodies at least in Kashmir. Low polling percentage and major mainstream parties of the Valley National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party staying away from these polls have already put the question mark on this entire process.
Many BJP candidates have the won the municipal polls unopposed from different parts of the Valley. It remains to be seen how many seats would Peoples Conference win at least in Srinagar to stake the claim for Mayor’s post.
Former NC spokesman, who said goodbye to his party for boycotting the ULB and Panchayat polls, has emerged as a strong contender for Mayor’s post. He contested the ULB polls as an independent candidate. Governor Satya Pal Malik has already hinted that Srinagar could get a foreign returned Mayor.
With just one day left for the results to be announced the politicians, who took part in these polls are working out permutations and combinations to have a say in the Urban Local Bodies across Kashmir.
