Race for Mayor’s post begins

The Urban Local Bodies polls have ended in Jammu and Kashmir. The voter turnout in the Valley has been low but in Jammu region polling percentage has been high. In Kashmir many candidates have won the elections unopposed. However in Jammu, people are waiting for the results eagerly as media reports suggest that independents have better chances than the candidates of the traditional parties.
The results of the polls would be declared on October 20. Despite PDP and NC not taking parts in the municipal polls and polling percentage being low in Kashmir people associated with politics are waiting for the final results to come as everyone wants to know who would be the Mayor of Srinagar.
Already lot has been said about Srinagar getting a foreign returned Mayor. Now it remains to be seen whether the BJP would allow it to happen or not. Recently state president of BJP Ravinder Raina had said that Mayor for Srinagar City would be from their party.
“For the first time, Mayor of Srinagar will be from BJP, and he will be elected by the people and will work for their welfare,” Raina had said.
BJP has been claiming that it has already won the municipal elections in Kashmir and it has made inroads in the Valley. The foreign returned candidate, who has become a talk of the town, after snapping ties with National Conference, he contested the ULB polls as an independent candidate. If BJP wants to have its own Mayor then the foreign returned candidate would have to join the BJP. Within a few days picture would become clear. Polls are over now the time has come for politicians to become active.
