Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has dispelled the notion that granting more powers to the Leh and Kargil development councils is a step towards the trifurcation of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. He has said that trifurcation of J&K will be disastrous.
In September, the State Administrative Council headed by the Governor Malik approved the draft Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (Amendment) Bill, 2018. The amendments give councils more power to collect and levy taxes and control various government departments in districts. Besides, all public properties constructed with council fund shall belong to the councils.
Soon after the Governor’s administration granted more powers to the LAHDC speculations were rife that it’s a first step towards trifurcating Jammu and Kashmir. People who have been demanding that J&K should be trifurcated tried their best to create an impression that the trifurcation process has commenced and next step could be empowering Jammu region. No one can deny the fact that there are many voices in Jammu and Ladakh regions which have been demanding that these two regions should be given the union territory status. Till date the regimes which have come to power in New Delhi have not considered this demand. Recently a senior BJP leader had said that his party is not in favour of trifurcating the state as they don’t want to give Kashmiri politicians a chance to have their own assembly.
The Kashmir based mainstream parties are of the opinion if New Delhi tries to trifurcate the state it could have far reaching consequences and would put the question mark on J&K accession with the union of India.
People who have been running a campaign to trifurcate the state would have to look for new ideas to create a wedge between the three regions of the state. All their previous tricks like “discrimination” bogey have not made any difference.
