Srinagar, Oct 10: Train service was suspended on Wednesday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike in the areas where second phase of polling was held Wednesday in 49 municipal wards.
Train service was resumed only on Tuesday after remaining suspended on Monday when the first of the four phase polling was held in the state.
We have received a fresh advisory from police to suspend all train runs in the Kashmir valley Wednesday, a senior railway official said.
Therefore, he said, trains will not chug on Budgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region track. Similarly trains will also not run on Srinagar-Budgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir, he said.
He said railway authorities are acting on the advice from the state administration. We cannot take decision to resume or suspend train service since safety and security of passengers besides railway officials and property was necessary as in the past railway suffered huge losses during strikes and protests.
Train service has become very popular in the Kashmir valley as it is being considered cheap, fast and safe against other mode of transport.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik have called for strike only in areas where the polling will be held today. The areas included Solina, Alochibagh, Sheikh Dawood colony Batmaloo, Ziarat Batmaloo, Shaheed Gunj, Karan Nagar, Chattabal, Qamarwari, Bemina east, Bemina west, Nundresh colony, Parimpora, Zainakote, Lawaypora, Mujgund, Tankipora, Haba kadal, Barbarshah, Fateh kadal, Munawarabad in Srinagar and Langate, Sumbal, Kunzar, Watergam, Chararshrieef, Beerwah, Magam yaripora,Frisal, Anantnag, Bijbehara in other parts of the valley. Geelani and Mirwaiz are under house arrest and Malik under detention.
