Hurriyat activist shot dead in Shopian village

Srinagar, Oct 11: A Hurriyat activist was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Meemender area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday sparking strong protests by the locals.
Reports said that Tariq Ahmad Ganie, who was a former militant, was fired upon by gunmen near his home at Meemender village.
In the incident Ganie received serious bullet wounds and was taken to nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
A police spokesman in a statement issued here said that militants Thursday afternoon shot at and critically injured an individual at Meemandar area of Shopian.
“The individual was evacuated to nearby hospital for medical attention, however, he succumbed to his injuries. The slain individual has been identified as Tariq Ahmad Ganie son of Mohammad Yaqoob Ganie resident of Meemandar Shopian,” the spokesman said.
Police have registered a case in this regard and investigations has been initiated in an instant manner, he said.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people participated in the funeral prayers of the deceased Hurriyat activist. A group of militants also appeared at the funeral and fired scores of shots in air to pay homage to the Hurriyat activist. (GNS)
