ULB polls far from over

The first phase of the Urban Local Bodies polls passed off without any violent incident taking place as situation in the poll bound areas remained by and large peaceful.
Overall polling percentage in Kashmir was very low as only 8% people exercised their franchise, while Jammu and Ladakh regions witnessed brisk polling.
The ULB polls are still far from over as the polling in other phases is yet to be held. Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies have to ensure that no violent incident takes place in the coming days. First phase was crucial and it has passed off. Other phases are equally important as the polling is going to be held in Kashmir in many sensitive areas. These elections are a big challenge for the security agencies. In fact the government has taken all precautions to ensure that the identity of the candidates contesting these elections remains a closely guarded secret. They have been provided with the secure accommodations so that they don’t become the soft targets. The security plan has been much better than 2017 when bye-elections for Srinagar parliamentary constituency were held. The polling day witnessed large scale violence which led to bye-elections being called off in Anantnag parliamentary constituency.
The polling for the maximum wards in Srinagar and a few areas in south Kashmir is all set to be held on Wednesday. The security agencies are on toes as they don’t want to take any chances on the polling day. Holding ULB and panchayat polls were a big challenge for the Governor’s administration as the elected governments failed to conduct these polls when they were running the state.
