Srinagar, Oct 8: Train service was suspended for security reasons on Monday in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike on the first of the four phased Urban Local Bodies (UBL) and Panchayat polling today.
We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley after an advisory was received from police last night, a senior railway official said.
He said no train will chug on Budgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region. Similarly no train will chug on Srinagar-Budgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir, he said.
We are witnessing heavy rush of passengers in the morning every Monday when people are resuming their normal business and duties after Sunday, he said. However, he said, we are acting on the advice of police as safety and security of passengers besides railway officials and property was necessary as in the past railway suffered huge losses during protests.
He said train will be resumed only after receiving green signal from police and divisional authorities.
