Road accidents in Doda and Kishtwar districts in Chenab Valley have become a routine. It’s unfortunate that people have been losing lives on this stretch continuously.
According to the official data at least 76 people were killed and 472 injured in more than 350 road accidents in twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar in Chenab Valley since January this year. These figures are alarming. Everyone has been asking one question why authorities have failed to prevent the overloading on the hilly roads. The fingers are being pointed towards the traffic policemen. They are being accused of being in hand in glove with the transporters. Had it not been so, old and overcrowded mini buses would not have plied on the hilly and dangerous roads.
Authorities cannot run away and term the accidents as an “Act of God” whenever accidents happen most of the times human errors are responsible for it. The law enforcing agencies have to ensure that transporters don’t violate the laws and fall in the line. The traffic policemen manning the Srinagar-Jammu highway and the roads leading to Chenab Valley have to give up their laidback approach and need to become active. They can’t just act as mute spectators and allow transporters to play with the lives of the people.
Chenab Valley is not the only place in the world which is nestled in the mountains. There are hundreds of places across the globe where traffic plies amidst the hills and mountains but the roads are safe.
It’s unfortunate that not much attention has been paid to secure the roads and highways in Doda and Kishtwar districts. People of these areas have been demanding that government should do something to prevent these accidents and the people at the helm cannot just sleep over this problem forever.
