With just a few days left for the Urban Local Bodies polls, the security has been beefed up in Kashmir. Police and other security agencies are on toes to ensure that these elections are held in a peaceful manner.
The contestants who are taking part in these polls have been kept in high security zones to prevent them from becoming soft targets.
Many candidates have been elected unopposed in south Kashmir. According to the official figures 1283 candidates are in the fray for the first phase in the 422 wards going for polls on October 8.
Peoples Democratic Party and National Conference deciding to boycott the polls has benefitted the Bharatiya Janata Party as many candidates of the saffron party have won the elections unopposed.BJP’s dream to make inroads in the Valley has been realized. The party would try to take the advantage of the emerging situation and would try to attract more and more people towards the party fold. But chances about people accepting BJP in Kashmir look bleak.
At present the focus of the entire administration is to ensure that polls are held in a peaceful atmosphere and people should come out to vote without any fear. But PDP and NC staying away from polls has already turned the contest one-sided as workers of both the parties are unlikely to come forward and throng the polling booths. Whatever said and done the security agencies have a Herculean task on their hands besides ensuring peaceful polls they have to protect the lives of candidates, who are contesting these polls. Next few days are going to be tough and everyone has kept his fingers crossed.
