Srinagar, Sep 30: A Constable was killed after militants attacked a police station in south Kashmir district of Shopian and decamped with his service rifle on Sunday morning.
Official sources said a group of burqa-clad militants knocked at the main gate of Police Station Shopian early on Sunday morning.
They said when the sentry, identified as Constable Saqib Mohiuddin Mir, opened the gate, militants fired at him. “Mir was injured in the attack,” they said.
“Before the security force personnel in the police station could react, militants escaped with the service weapon of Mir,” they said, adding the injured policeman was immediately rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
A massive hunt has been launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack, they said.
Confirming the attack on the police station, a police spokesperson said that militants in the wee hours fired indiscriminately on Police Station Shopian. “The attack was repulsed by the alert jawans,” he said.
In this incident, he said one policeman Constable Saqib Mir sustained injuries and was evacuated to a nearby hospital. However, he said the injured jawan succumbed at a hospital.
“Police have registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the matter,” he added.
Meanwhile, a wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Lines Shopian.
Police officers led by DIG SKR Amit Kumar laid floral wreaths and paid rich tributes to the martyred soul.
