Srinagar, Sep 23: A top commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), a resident of Pakistan, was killed in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on Sunday morning in Tral in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, official sources said on Sunday.
Clashes erupts in the area while authorities suspended mobile internet service as a precautionary measure to prevent spread of rumours.
They said on a tip off about the presence of militants troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO at village Dar Ganaie Gund Mohalla Aripal, Tral, in Pulwama district early this morning.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants opened fire, they said adding security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter.
A militant was killed in the operation. The slain militant was identified as Adnan Bhai, a resident of Pakistan. He was a top commander of JeM, involved in many militancy related incidents. Additional security forces were rushed to the area to further tighten the cordon, they said.
Meanwhile, several persons were injured, one of them critically, when security forces burst teargas shells and opened fire to disperse demonstrators trying to disrupt Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, official sources said.
They said immediately after security forces launched CASO at Dar Ganai Gund, Tral, in Pulwama hundreds of people, mostly youths, hit the streets in the nearby areas and trying to disrupt the operation. However, security forces and state police personnel already deployed to prevent demonstrators to march towards encounter site swung into action and chased away them. The demonstrators later reassembled and pelted stones on security forces who resorted to lathicharge which had no impact.
Later security forces burst teargas shells and opened fire to disperse the demonstrators who continued stone pelting.
Several persons, including security men, were also injured who were rushed to local hospital. However, one of the injured identified as Manzoor Ahmad Dar( 25), son of Assadulla Dar, a resident of Gang Tral received bullet injury on his face near Wagad crossing. He has been referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment, they said.
