A day after India and Pakistan foreign ministers had agreed to meet on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, India called off the talks after three policemen were abducted and killed in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Had the meeting taken place this would have been the first such high-level engagement since suspension of dialogue between the two nations after the Pathankot air base attack in 2016. But it did not happen as New Delhi took a serious note of killing of three policemen.
On Thursday India had said that meeting between Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi is not the resumption of the Indo-Pak dialogue but the New Delhi had agreed to the meeting following a request from Pakistan. The ties between the two countries have been at their lowest ebb since 2016 as both the countries have not been talking to each other. One did not expect any breakthrough from the forthcoming meeting between the two foreign ministers as it was just an informal meet. But now the meet has been called off and the possibilities about ice getting broken and resumption of parleys between the two countries have been washed out.
People in Jammu and Kashmir know it very well that whenever India and Pakistan fight they (J&K people) get trampled. They are aware about the fact that if India and Pakistan decide to give up hostilities situation in J&K would improve and they would be able to live in peace. But it seems that for time being people of J&K would have to accept that relations between India and Pakistan are not going to improve as the meeting between the two foreign ministers which could have broken the ice has been called off.
