Governor Satya Pal Malik has asked the Power Development Department to make judicious and timely use of the available funds to ensure augmentation of power generation and upgradation of transmission and distribution network in the state.
The transmission and distribution network have been major issues especially in the Valley. Usually power generation declines during winter months and even if the northern grid provides Kashmir with additional power the PDD fails to utilize it in the absence of proper distribution system at place.
The times have changed and there is adequate central funding available under various schemes for universal power coverage. The PDD should utilize the resources in a proper way so that the electricity reaches every household. The department also needs to ensure that the networking and distribution system in Kashmir which has become obsolete is revived and the power pilferages are stopped.
When PDD started installing meters in the Valley it had promised the consumers that metered areas would get the power supply 24×7 but it did not happen. Soon after Autumn sets in Kashmir electricity starts playing hide and seek in metered as well as non-metered areas. Load shedding is a routine in winters and it would continue to be so if the PDD fails to upgrade the system. Still a few months are left for the winter season to commence in Kashmir and the PDD should gear up its men and machinery to ensure that people don’t face problems during the chilly winter season. The people at the helm need to put their act together to ensure that they don’t have to cut a sorry figure during winter months.
