Srinagar, Aug 31: Commenting on the deferment of hearing on petitions challenging the validity of Article 35-A, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said the resistance leadership commended the resilience and steadfastness of people of Jammu and Kashmir for standing up against the ‘assault on our identity.’
Mirwaiz took to Twitter after the Supreme Court deferred the hearing to second week of January next year.
“Joint Resistance Leadership commends the people of J&K for their exemplary resilience and steadfastness in firmly standing up against the deliberate assault by anti Kashmir organisations and agencies on our identity and struggle for self determination through demographic change, by challenging the hereditary state subject law in Indian Supreme Court. These designs will always meet their Waterloo by the unity, resilience and courage of the people of J&K,” Mirwaiz tweeted.
Earlier today, the court adjourned the hearing on a string of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Article 35A, which protects the state subject laws and special rights and privileges of J&K’s permanent residents.
The court said the next hearing on the case would take place in second week of January next year. The ruling came after the Jammu and Kashmir government requested the court to adjourn the hearing in view of preparations for Panchayat and Municipal polls in the state.
Joint Resistance Leadership had called for shutdown on August 30 and 31 to protest attempts the scrap the legislation.
