Srinagar, Aug 29: Four policemen were killed in a militant attack at Arhama in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.
Reports said that suspected militants opened fire upon the escort party of DSP headquarters Shopian at Arhama village Wednesday in the afternoon.
In the attack, four cops suffered serious bullet wounds and were rushed to nearby hospital where all of them succumbed to injuries.
The escort party had gone to the area to repair a police vehicle when the incident took place.
Meanwhile, official sources said that the militants after carrying out the attack decamped with three weapons.
A police spokesman in a statement said that militants in the afternoon hours fired indiscriminately upon a police party at Arhama.
In this incident, four cops sustained gunshot wounds and were evacuated to nearby hospital for medical attention. However, all the four injured policemen succumbed to their injuries.
The slain policemen were identified as constable Javid Ahmad Bhat (belt number 806/SPN) son of Nazir Ahmad Bhat of Panzinera, HMT Srinagar, constable Muhammad Iqbal Mir (belt number 660/SPN) son of Abdul Rehman Mir of Hudur Chaman Baramulla, constable Ishfaq Ahmad Mir (belt number 763/SPN) son Muhammad Malik Mir of Rafiabad Baramulla and SPO Adil Ahmad Bhat son Manzoor Ahmad Bhat (belt number 395/SPN) of Zawoora Shopian.
Police have registered a case and initiated investigations in the instant matter, he said.
The spokesman said that a wreath-laying ceremony for the slain were later held at DPL Shopian.
“Civil and Police Officers led by Director General of Police J&K S.P Vaid laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the slain who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty,” the spokesman said.
Among others who paid floral tributes include IGP Kashmir S.P Pani, DIG SKR, DC Shopian, ASP Shopian and other officers and jawans, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, Dua-E-Majlis was Organized at Jamia Masjid of DPL Srinagar after the Asar prayers as a mark of respect in favour of the four policemen who lost their lives in the line of duty, an official said.
He said that later in the day, SP West, SDPO and other officers visited the slain Constable Javid Ahmad Bhat at Panzinara. (GNS)
