Youth critically injured during clashes in Shopian village

Srinagar, Aug 10: A youth was critically injured when security forces burst teargas shells and opened fire to disperse demonstrators, who were trying to disrupt a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Shopian on Friday.
Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint search operation was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, Army and CRPF at Tengwani in Shopian on Friday.
However, when security forces were sealing the area, people hit the streets and tried to disrupt the CASO.
A large number of security forces deployed to prevent any protests, immediately swung into action and tried to chase away the demonstrators. However, when it had no impact, security forces burst teargas shells and later opened fire to disperse the demonstrators, who were pelting stones and bricks.
A youth, identified as Fayaz Ahmad, was wounded in the firing, they said, adding the injured was immediately taken to a local hospital from where he was referred to a SHMS hospital in Srinagar. Fayaz has received a bullet injury to his abdomen.
Search operation and clashes were still going on when the reports last came in.
Meanwhile, least three youths suffered pellet injuries during the clashes which erupted between youth and government forces in Srinagar’s Old City after Friday prayers even as authorities allowed prayers at historic Jamia Masjid here.
According to reports, stone pelting clashes erupted in Nowhatta area of Old City soon after the Friday prayers were concluded in the area.
Scores of youths pelted stones on police and paramilitary CRPF in these areas. The forces retaliated by firing tear gas and pellets.
At least three youths suffered pellet wounds in forces’ action during clashes in the area.
Meanwhile, thousands of people offered Friday prayers which was addressed by Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
