Security forces have intensified the frisking in Srinagar city ahead of I-Day to foil any attempt by militants to carry out any major strike in the city.
It’s not for the first time that security has been beefed up in the city ahead of August 15 or January 26. It happens every year as the authorities want these two days in a year to pass off peacefully.
Earlier main I-day function was held at Bakshi Stadium and this practice continued for many years. From last year venue has been changed and the main I-Day function is scheduled to be held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium at Sonawar.
Security agencies are of the opinion that this venue is much secure than the other places. This year security in the city has been heightened in wake of the increase in militant attacks in southern areas of the Valley. There are apprehensions that militants from south Kashmir may sneak into the city and carry out some major strike. The police top brass are trying to plug in the loop holes to ensure that the I-Day passes off peacefully.
The security grid has been activated. Security forces have established checkpoints at several places in the city and outskirts, checking passing vehicles, particularly two wheelers, and frisking travellers.
All the vehicles entering the city from different areas are being checked and the watch is being kept over the possible suspects who can foment trouble. As the I-Day is approaching the security dragnet is being tightened. The common man is counting days as he is the one who is suffering due to heightened security and restrictions.
