Srinagar, Aug 2: Security forces have intensified searches and frisking in the summer capital, Srinagar, to foil any attempt by militants to smuggle in arms and ammunition into the city ahead of I-Day.
Security forces have established checkpoints at several places in the city and outskirts, checking passing vehicles, particularly two wheelers, and frisking travellers.
Check points have been established at several places in the city, including Qamarwari, Kaksarai, Batamaloo, Jahangir Chowk and MA road. The security personnel are checking passing vehicles, particularly two wheelers, before allowing them to go ahead.
“We have directions to conduct random searches of vehicles and check the identity cards of those boarding the vehicles,” a security force officer said at Budshah Bridge.
“All three wheelers besides motorcycles and scooters and cars, particularly with license plates from other districts, were being properly searched before allowing them to go,” they added.
A fresh alert has been issued to security forces and state police personnel on the ground to remain on alert to foil any militant attempt to smuggle in arms and ammunition from outskirts to cause disturbance in the city, where main I-Day function will be held. The fresh alert comes in the backdrop of increase in militant attacks and activities in the city.
A CRPF man was killed and two others were injured in a militant attack during broad day light at Batamallo, just half-a-km from Police Control Room (PCR), Srinagar last week.
