Srinagar, Jul 27: Panic gripped Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, Srinagar and adjoining areas when security forces suddenly sealed the entire area and launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) after Friday prayers to the surprise of shopkeepers and customers.
The operation comes just three days after a CRPF man was killed and two others were injured in a militant attack during broad day light at Batamallo, just half-a-km from Police Control Room (PCR), Srinagar.
Official sources confirmed the CASO, however refused the comment on the reasons behind the operation. “The CASO happened but I will not be able to tell the reason behind the operation has it is confidential,” they said.
However, a police official said that it was a mock drill conducted by a joint team of police and CRPF.
Official sources said that state police and the CRPF personnel were deployed on high-rise buildings between the historic Ghanta Ghar and Koker Bazar area. “Movement of traffic was also suspended during this time between Ghanta Ghar and Amira Kada,” they said.
