There is good news for the people of Kashmir. Power scenario would improve in winters as the Sterlite Power is poised to commission Northern Region System Strengthening project ahead of schedule.
According to the media reports the commissioning of this line would help in stabilizing the power scenario in the Valley and would help people relax during winter season.
It has been observed in the past that as soon the Autumn season begins in Kashmir the Power Development Department announces load shedding schedule in metered as well as non-metered areas. The load shedding hours increase with the advent of winter season and keep on haunting the people till summer arrives.
This year Kashmir faced worst power crisis as the generation declined due the water levels remaining low due to no rain and snow during the peak winter season. When power crisis engulfed the Valley, former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti approached New Delhi to seek help. The northern grid agreed to release 1000 MW extra but J&K could not utilize the extra power as there was no distribution system at place in the Valley. This plunged Kashmir into complete darkness during the winter months.
Failure of the PDD to utilize the additional power provided by the Northern grid led to many heads getting rolled. The unscheduled power cuts during winter months triggered massive protests in the Valley and embarrassed the then PDP led government in the state.
Jammu and Kashmir currently produces only 800 MW of power and within three years it would require almost 4,000 MW of power. The Sterlite project would deliver over 1,000 MW of electricity from Punjab to the Kashmir by strengthening the national grid.
