Chief Secretary BVR Subramanyam has directed the Housing and Urban development department to complete the finalization of Srinagar Master Plan 2035 in 30 days time starting from July 18.
The Srinagar Master Plan has been marred by controversies and political interference for the past one year and has been in limbo.
The Srinagar Development Authority had put the draft of Srinagar Master Plan in public domain in May 2017 to seek the feedback but till now it has not been finalized.
The new Master Plan envisages complete overhaul of the Srinagar city and intends to increase the existing area from 416 sqkms to 766 sqkms. It includes all municipal areas of Srinagar Municipal Corporation and that of Budgam, Ganderbal, Pampore, Khrew Urban Local Bodies, and 160 villages in 12 tehsils of six Kashmir districts.
The Governor’s administration has taken an initiative to clear the Srinagar Master Plan within one month and if it’s cleared within the one month deadline it would set the ball rolling for revamping the Srinagar city which could turn it into a Metropolitan city.
The Chief Secretary asking Housing and Urban and Development Department to go ahead with the finalization of the draft is an indication that the Governor’s administration wants to clear the hurdles so that Srinagar city witnesses a massive development and its complexion changes in coming days.
Srinagar city needs proper planning. If the people at the helm put their heads together it can turn into one of the best cities in the world due to its scenic beauty and location. One hopes that Governor’s administration follows it up and finalizes the draft plan before the change of guard in the state.
