Srinagar, Jul 22: Three militants, involved in the abduction and killing of a trainee constable of Jammu and Kashmir police on
Saturday, were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Kulgam on Sunday.
Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid and Defence Ministry spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia confirmed the killing of three
militants in the encounter which ensued early Sunday morning when a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched
following tip at Khudwani in Kulgam.
A police spokesperson said when a joint team of Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and
CRPF were moving towards a particular area in the Khudwani, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate firing with
automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated and in the fierce encounter three militants were killed.
He said the slain militants were involved in the abduction and later killing of trainee police constable Mohammad Saleem Shah,
whose dead body was recovered on Saturday. Shah, who was on leave, was abducted from his house at village Mutalhama,
Kulgam on Friday evening. The house from where the militants were firing was blasted by the security forces.
Dr Vaid said bodies of all the militants besides their weapons were recovered. “The militants belong to militant outfit LeT,” police
sources said.
They said that the slain militants have been identified as Abu Muaviya, Pakistani national, Umar Rashid Wani and Suhail
Ahmad.
A police spokesperson said that in a significant breakthrough, concerted efforts of the security forces resulted in the elimination
of the prime accused involved in the abduction and killing of Constable Saleem in Kulgam.
He said a joint patrol of security forces in the wee hours of Sunday morning launched searches at Redwani area in District
Kulgam after it received credible inputs about the presence of the militants in a cluster of houses.
“As the security forces advanced, hiding militants fired resulting in a brief encounter in which three militants were killed. No
collateral damage occurred during the encounter,” he said.
On the basis of the incriminating materials seized, he said the killed militants were identified as Muawiya, a foreigner of
Pakistani origin, Suhail Ahmad and Mudassar, all involved in the killing of Constable Saleem.
“As per police records the militants were affiliated with the proscribed militant outfit LeT and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM),” he said.
He said Mauwiya’s involvement was established in a number of civilian killings. “Suhail who was working as a labourer earlier
after he had dropped out from school later joined a militant outfit. Police probe is on for ascertaining complicity of the other co-
conspirators who assisted in the commission of the gruesome crime leading to the death of Constable Saleem,” he said.
He said some arms and ammunition including but not limited to two AK 47 rifles and a carbine have also been recovered from
the site of encounter. “Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated into the matter,” he added.
Meanwhile, thousands of people on Sunday participated in the funeral prayers of two slain militants in south Kashmir’s Kulgam
district.
Reports said that thousands of people from Redwani, Katrasoo and its adjoining areas of Kulgam took part in the funeral
prayers of Suhail Ahmad and Mudassar Bhat.
