Make Srinagar safe

Make Srinagar safe

The recent flood scare has once again brought to fore that Srinagar can get inundated at any point of time and no one is safe in the city.
For time being the flood threat is over and people are hoping that weather remains fair and there are no more rains. The recent scare has exposed the tall claims of the erstwhile PDP-BJP regime that lot of work was done to prevent flooding.
Recent scare has made it clear that since 2014 nothing much has been done and all the experiments, including dredging of river Jehlum, were a total failure.
Now it’s for Governor’s administration to clear the mess and expedite the works, which were not even started up by the previous regime. After the fall of the PDP-BJP regime skeletons are tumbling out and its coming to fore that they just indulged in rhetoric and nothing else.
The Governor’s administration would have to chalk out a contingency plan to save the Srinagar city and other low lying areas from the possible floods till the winter arrives. It’s a big challenge as no groundwork has been done till date. The people at the helm would have to ensure that adequate steps are taken to prevent the Jehlum and other rivers from overflowing. To begin with the administration has to strengthen the bunds and clear the illegal constructions which have come up on the banks of rivers during the past four years. It would help them in saving the vulnerable areas. The government would have to wait for dredging till the Monsoon season gets over. Till then people will have to keep their fingers crossed.
