Srinagar: An encounter broke out between militants and government forces in Chatpora area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama town on Friday.
“A joint team of army’s 55 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation following specific information about the presence of some militants at Thamuna village adjacent to Chatpora near main town Pulwama,” a local news agency quoted police official as having said.
As the forces zeroed in on the spot and fired some warning shots, the militants fired upon them triggering a firefight the official said.
He said soon a large number of youth took to streets and tried to march towards the gunfight site. However, the forces used tear smoke shells to disperse them.
The youth pelted stones on the forces resulting into the clashes, reports said.
